Check Your Grading First
This is the single most important thing you can do before monsoon season, and it's the one most people skip.
The ground around your home should slope away from the foundation — at minimum, 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet. This directs rainwater (and the runoff from your roof) away from the house instead of pooling against the foundation.
The problem is that grading doesn't stay put. Las Cruces soil settles. Irrigation causes localized erosion. Foot traffic compacts paths. After a year or two, that careful grading from when the house was built has often flattened out or reversed in spots.
Walk your perimeter and look for:
- Low spots where water would pool against the foundation

- Check that the gravel hasn't shifted or thinned — add material where it's low
- Verify the swale still has a clear path to discharge (street, arroyo, retention area)
For French drains:
- Clear the inlet grate of debris
- Run water through the system with a hose to verify it's draining, not backing up
- If water pools at the surface when you test it, the drain may be clogged with sediment — this is a professional repair job
For downspout extensions:
- Extend downspouts at least 4–6 feet from the foundation

Protect Your Irrigation System
Monsoon storms don't just water your yard — they rearrange it. And your irrigation system takes the hit.
Before the monsoon:
- Walk every zone and make a mental note of where drip emitters, valve boxes, and exposed pipe connections are. After a storm dumps silt across your landscape, you'll need to find them again.
- Check spray heads for cracks or damage. A head that's barely hanging on will fail completely when runoff hits it.
- Verify valve box lids are secure and boxes are draining properly. Standing water in a valve box corrodes wiring and weakens solenoid connections.
- If you have drip tubing sitting on top of bare ground, bury it under 2–3 inches of rock. Exposed tubing gets shifted, buried in silt, or disconnected by runoff. Covered tubing stays put. (This is also one of the reasons drip outperforms sprinklers in landscape beds — less exposed infrastructure to damage.)
After every big storm:
Turn on each zone one at a time and walk it. You're looking for:
- Emitters that got buried or packed with mud (they'll stop flowing)

- Valve boxes with standing water inside
- Erosion around exposed pipes or risers

Erosion Control on Slopes

- Plant roots. Established desert plants anchor soil surprisingly well. A slope planted with native groundcovers and shrubs resists erosion far better than bare ground with just rock. The root systems bind the soil; the canopy breaks raindrop impact.
- Swales at slope bottoms. A gravel swale at the base of a slope catches runoff and directs it away from structures and landscape beds. Without one, all the water and debris from the slope dumps wherever gravity takes it — usually somewhere you don't want.
If you had erosion damage last monsoon season, the same spots will erode again this year unless you fix the underlying drainage. The storms don't get gentler.
Landscape Beds and Plants
Monsoon season is simultaneously the best and worst time for Las Cruces landscapes. The rain is genuinely helpful — free deep watering that reaches roots sprinklers and drip can't — but the intensity creates problems.
Protecting plants during storms:
- Stake young trees. Any tree planted in the last year should be staked through its first monsoon season. Las Cruces monsoon winds can gust above 60 mph, and a tree that hasn't anchored its root system will lean or blow over.
- Clear debris from bed edges. Rock and gravel that wash out of beds during storms clog drainage paths and can bury low-growing plants.
- Watch for root rot after rain. Desert plants are adapted to drought, not standing water. If a bed stays soggy for more than 48 hours after a storm, you have a drainage problem. Desert-adapted plants like agaves, yuccas, and cacti will rot if their roots sit in saturated soil.
Using monsoon rain wisely:
- Turn off irrigation for 2–3 days after significant rain. The ground is saturated. Adding more water wastes money and damages plants.
- If you have a smart controller, it should do this automatically with a rain sensor or weather data feed. If yours doesn't have this feature, it's worth the upgrade — a basic rain sensor is under $30.
Turn Off Your Irrigation After Storms
This deserves its own section because it's the most common mistake we see during monsoon season.
It rained hard last night. The ground is soaked. Your irrigation system is set to run at 5 a.m. — and it does, right on schedule, dumping water onto saturated soil.
That water has nowhere to go. It either runs off (wasting water and your money) or sits in the root zone (promoting root rot, especially in xeriscape plantings and desert-adapted plants).
If you have a programmable controller: Learn how to use the rain delay feature. Most controllers have a button that skips irrigation for 24, 48, or 72 hours. Hit it after every significant rain.
If you have a smart controller: You shouldn't have to do anything. Weather-based controllers check local conditions and skip cycles automatically. This is one of the best arguments for upgrading — during monsoon season alone, the water savings can be substantial.
If you're managing irrigation manually: Just turn the system off for 2–3 days after rain. Check the soil before turning it back on — if it's still damp 3 inches down, wait another day.
When to Call for Help
Some monsoon damage is DIY — clearing a clogged swale, resetting buried emitters, adjusting a shifted spray head. But some problems need professional attention:
- Foundation drainage issues. If water is pooling against your foundation after storms, this is a grading and drainage problem that needs to be solved correctly. Improper fixes can make it worse.
- Slope erosion that's getting worse each year. Putting more rock on an eroding slope without addressing the water flow pattern is temporary. A proper erosion control solution involves regrading, drainage, and sometimes retaining structures.
- Irrigation system damage. If runoff shifted a main line, cracked a pipe, or filled your valve boxes with mud, that's a repair job — not a DIY cleanup.
- Tree damage. A mature tree that's leaning after a storm needs professional assessment. Staking a 4-inch trunk that's partially uprooted is not the same as staking a new planting.
