Trees, Shrubs & Desert Plantings

Planting & Gardening in Las Cruces, NM

Not everything survives at 3,900 feet in the Chihuahuan Desert. We plant trees, shrubs, ground covers, and ornamentals that are proven for this elevation, this soil, and this heat — so you stop replacing things that die every summer.

Plants That Actually Work Here

The Mesilla Valley has specific conditions that most nursery advice doesn't account for: alkaline caliche soils, low humidity, intense UV, hard freezes in winter, and monsoon bursts in summer. Picking the wrong plant means watching it struggle for a season and then replacing it.

David has been planting in Las Cruces for over 19 years. He knows which species thrive at this elevation, which ones need afternoon shade, and which ones are a waste of money in our soil. Every planting comes with the right irrigation hookup and soil amendment so it actually establishes.

  • Shade and ornamental trees sized to your property
  • Native and adapted shrubs, perennials, and ground covers
  • Soil amendment for alkaline caliche conditions
  • Drip irrigation connected to every new planting

What's Included

Plant Selection

David helps you choose species based on your sun exposure, soil, and the look you want — not what the nursery is pushing that week.

Soil Prep

Las Cruces soil is alkaline and often has caliche layers. We amend planting holes so roots can actually spread and establish.

Irrigation Hookup

Every new plant gets connected to a drip zone. No guessing with a hose — it's automated and water-efficient from the start.

Mulch & Finish

Rock mulch or organic mulch around plantings to retain moisture, control weeds, and give the beds a finished look.

Planting FAQ

When is the best time to plant in Las Cruces?
Fall (September through November) is ideal — the soil is still warm for root growth, but the air is cooling down so plants aren't heat-stressed. Spring (March through May) is the second-best window. We avoid planting during peak summer unless you have a specific need and can commit to the extra watering.
Can I grow fruit trees in Las Cruces?
Absolutely. Pecan trees have been a staple of the Mesilla Valley for generations. Pomegranate, fig, and some citrus varieties do well in protected south-facing spots. Late frosts can damage stone fruit blossoms, so placement and variety selection matter. David can walk you through what makes sense for your yard.
Do you guarantee the plants?
We stand behind our workmanship on every install. Plants are living things and we can't control what happens after we leave — but we pick species with a strong track record here, plant them correctly, and set up the irrigation so they have the best chance. We also give you care instructions specific to each plant.
Will you remove old plants and trees?
Yes. If old shrubs, dead trees, or overgrown plantings need to come out before new ones go in, we handle that as part of the project. Hauling off debris is included.
