Instant Lawn, Done Right

Sod Installation in Las Cruces, NM

A sod lawn gives you green grass the day we finish — no waiting weeks for seed to come in. But in the desert, sod only works if the ground beneath it is prepped correctly and the irrigation is dialed in from the start. We handle all of it.

Why Sod Beats Seed in Las Cruces

Seeding a lawn in the Mesilla Valley is a gamble. Low humidity, alkaline soil, wind, and summer heat work against germination. Sod gives you an established root system from day one — it just needs the right base and watering schedule to take hold.

We source warm-season sod varieties suited to this elevation and climate. Bermuda is the go-to for full-sun yards, and we can mix in other warm-season options for shade areas or specific needs.

  • Instant green lawn — no bare-dirt waiting period
  • Warm-season varieties that handle 100-degree summers
  • Proper grading to prevent puddles and foundation drainage issues
  • Irrigation setup included so the sod roots properly

Best Time to Lay Sod Here

In Las Cruces, late spring through early fall is ideal for warm-season sod. The soil is warm enough for roots to establish quickly, and you can water on a consistent schedule before winter dormancy hits.

We can install in cooler months, but root establishment takes longer and the sod will go dormant before greening up in spring. David will walk you through timing based on your specific project.

How We Install Sod

1

Site Assessment

David walks the yard, checks drainage flow, soil conditions, and sun exposure. We figure out which sod variety fits your property and talk through the watering commitment.

2

Grading & Soil Prep

We strip old material, grade the surface away from your foundation, amend the soil if needed, and compact a smooth base. This step makes or breaks whether the sod takes root.

3

Sod Delivery & Lay

Fresh sod is laid the same day it arrives — no sitting on pallets drying out. We stagger seams, cut tight edges, and roll the surface for solid soil contact.

4

Irrigation & Watering Schedule

We connect or adjust your sprinkler system, set the controller for the initial heavy-watering phase, and give you a step-down schedule as the roots establish. Programmed to comply with the Las Cruces water ordinance.

Sod Installation FAQ

What type of sod works best in Las Cruces?
Bermuda grass is the most reliable warm-season sod for our climate. It thrives in full sun, handles the heat, and goes dormant in winter (which is normal and healthy). For shaded areas or specific use cases, we may suggest alternatives, but Bermuda is the workhorse for most Las Cruces lawns.
How much water does new sod need?
New sod needs consistent moisture for the first two to three weeks — typically watering twice daily to keep the root zone damp. After that, you taper down to a normal schedule. We program your controller and give you a written step-down plan that stays within the city's watering rules.
How long before I can walk on new sod?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after about two weeks. Give it three to four weeks before heavy use — playing on it, setting up furniture, etc. You can test by tugging a corner: if it resists pulling up, the roots have grabbed and you're good to go.
Will Bermuda sod go brown in winter?
Yes — Bermuda goes dormant when nighttime temps drop below about 50 degrees, usually late October through March in Las Cruces. It turns tan, stops growing, and greens up again in spring. This is completely normal and actually saves water during the cooler months. Some homeowners overseed with ryegrass for winter color, but it adds water use and maintenance.
