Grow What You Want, Where You Want

Raised Garden Beds in Las Cruces, NM

Las Cruces soil is alkaline, rocky, and full of caliche — not exactly garden-friendly. Raised beds let you control the soil, the drainage, and the watering so you can actually grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers without fighting the ground.

Why Raised Beds Work Better Here

In-ground gardening in the Mesilla Valley means dealing with pH levels above 8, caliche hardpan a few inches down, and soil that either bakes into concrete or turns to mud during monsoons. Raised beds bypass all of that.

We build the structure, fill it with a soil mix designed for what you want to grow, and connect drip irrigation so watering is consistent and efficient. The result is a garden that produces instead of struggles.

  • Custom soil mix — bypass alkaline caliche entirely
  • Better drainage than in-ground planting
  • Easier on your back — no kneeling in the dirt
  • Drip irrigation included for efficient watering

Materials We Use

Block & Stone

Concrete block, stacked stone, or natural rock walls that handle UV and temperature swings without cracking or rotting.

Treated Timber

Cedar or composite lumber for a traditional garden bed look. We avoid pressure-treated wood near edible plantings.

Steel Edging

Corten or powder-coated steel for a clean modern aesthetic that weathers naturally in the dry climate.

How We Build Your Beds

Build the Structure

We level the ground, build the bed walls to your chosen height and material, and make sure the base drains properly — no standing water, no erosion.

3

Fill & Amend

We fill with a blended soil mix — compost, topsoil, and amendments matched to what you're growing. No caliche, no rocks, no guessing.

4

Drip lines run through each bed and tied into your irrigation system. We walk you through watering schedules and planting tips for the season.

Raised Bed FAQ

What can I grow in a raised bed in Las Cruces?
Quite a lot. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, and chile are the obvious ones — they love the heat. Herbs like basil, cilantro, and rosemary do well. You can also grow greens in the cooler months (October through March). The key is matching your planting calendar to the season and having good soil in the bed.
How tall should raised beds be?
Most beds are one to two feet in height — enough to clear the caliche layer and give roots room to grow. If accessibility is a concern, we can build taller beds (30 to 36 inches) so you can garden without bending over. David will suggest a height based on what you're growing and how you want to use the space.
Do raised beds need more water than in-ground gardens?
They can dry out faster because of the better drainage and the exposed sides. That's why we include drip irrigation with every bed — it keeps moisture consistent without overwatering. Mulching the surface also helps retain moisture between watering cycles.
