Caliche

Caliche is the single most important thing to understand about Las Cruces soil. It's a cement-like layer of calcium carbonate that sits anywhere from six inches to several feet below the surface. Water can't drain through it. Roots can't penetrate it. If you plant a tree without breaking through the caliche layer first, that tree is growing in a shallow bathtub that fills up every time you irrigate.

French drains intercept subsurface water that pools above caliche. Erosion control protects slopes and planting beds from monsoon runoff. Stormwater mitigation manages the volume that arrives all at once in July and August.
